I don't know why I keep drinking water at the gym, it just seems to pour right out of me as soon as it's in.

When will I ever learn?

The last few training sessions with the ninja have been fairly exhausting.  My first 3 months on programme when I had a Jonathan day, I would wait until 15 minutes before it started to warm up on the treadmill or the elliptical and then enter the training full of energy...and butterflies.  The following 3 months, I switched things up by getting to the gym a couple of hours early and attacking the treadmill and then possibly hopping on a spin bike after.  The training session would then kill me, though my anxiety disappeared.  So, in the last month I have been getting to the gym a little early and then warming up by walking on the treadmill for an hour or so, having a little something to eat, a bit of a rest, before hopping on a machine for 5-10 minutes and then going into our sessions.  Here's the thing about ninjas - they are pretty tricky, so even if you have a date at 11AM, it can quickly turn into 10AM.  Bye-bye eating, bye-bye rest!

Last week just such skulduggery occurred.  After a brisk walk from home to the gym, and then an hour of hiking up an imaginary hill and then running down it (on a treadmill, obviously), the ninja came over to collect me an hour early:
"Feel like running?" he says, through a smirk.
"I've already been running," I reply, aware that he is about to test me.
"I was thinking a timed 800M."  His streak of evil ninjaness suddenly becomes very apparent.  His clean-cut appearance is simple subterfuge, he has always looked like the star quarterback in a made-for-TV-movie where the teenagers are all played by Hollywood actors in their late 20s.
"Um...okay," I say.  In my mind, I'm thinking he is doing this because he wants to see if I'm going to fight him, the strongest thing I can do is welcome the challenge...and beat my fastest time.
"How many laps is it?  17?"
"No, 18."  This is the 2nd time I've had to correct him on this matter.  As a rule, I tell him when he's forgotten to get me to do a set of exercises or miscounted reps.  Perhaps I'm a masochist, perhaps it's my integrity...all I know is that when he says jump, I will always ask, "How high?" because he knows what he's doing and he gets results.
"Why do I always think it's 17?"
"I don't know, Jonathan, maybe it's cuz you're pretty?" I say grinning, searching his eyes for approval.  Nothing.
"Ready to go?  Go."
And so I ran, I ran back and forth focusing on my breath, trying to increase the length of my stride, and my cadence.  Pushing myself harder every lap when he called out my time, and racing against my old self.  The first time I attempted the 800M, I walked the entire thing in something like 13 minutes.  The second time I ran the course in 5 minutes and 45 seconds, that is quite an improvement, don't you think?  So how will I fair with another 50 pounds gone?  Well, I think my time was 4 minutes and 52 seconds, the ninja assured me that if I hadn't had that slip at the beginning, I would have beaten my previous recorded time by at least a minute.  I agree, and if I hadn't already done an hour and a half of walking/running before I entered the race, that would have been a great advantage too!

His unpredictable training methods, keep me on my toes.  A ninja is always prepared, like every good Girl Guide, and I've been told on multiple occasions to be ready for anything...so that means wraps 'n' gloves, spinning shoes, towel, healthy lunch, snacks, water bottle full of Quench tea from Silk Road, and 2 changes of clothing in my gym bag at all times.  When I throw in my laptop and charger, that makes my bag 22 pounds or so - so not only is my walk to the Crystal Pool & Fitness Centre good cardio, it's weight bearing exercise!  The changes in clothing factor into this particular workout because after a good session on the treadmill, I will be dripping with sweat, and I will change into something less pruney-skin inducing.  After being plucked off the 'mill, and thrown into a timed run...I was a sweaty mess with no chance for a quick change.

Earlier in the week, J-Carp asked if it would be okay with me if Aaron, the lifeguard and aquafit instructor extraordinaire, could shadow one of our training sessions - of course!  He met us by the staircase on the other side of the pool.  Well, this is ominous, generally when we hang out by the staircase I am asked to run stairs as a warm-up, but that's not going to happen because I've already walked to the gym, walked and run on the treadmill, and then done a back and forth thing in the hallway, right?  Wrong.  The ninja thinks it would be a good idea to do a timed stair run.  Seriously?  Haha...do not let him see you sweat.  No wait, I'm already sweating, do not let him see that you don't want to do something, or think that you can't do something.
"Think you can do that?" he says, narrowing his eyes and tightening his jaw.
"Of course.  How many times up and down?"  Challenge accepted.
"Let's make it 18, same as the run."
I have a thing for odd numbers, so 18 doesn't sit right with me, "How about 19?"
"Then you'll end up at the bottom of the stairs."
"I don't care, 19 is better than 18," I will live to regret saying that.
"Do 18.  Go."
Off I go down the stairs, up the stairs, down the stairs, up the stairs, and so on and so forth.  I try to be as efficient as possible, but I know I'm taking a couple of extra steps at the top and the bottom of the staircase.  I place my whole foot on each riser as I power up so as not to hurt my calf (again), and I treat the way down as my reprieve.  I try to regulate my breathing, but I am getting tired.
"How many have I done?"  I call out as I near the top, after what seems to be an infinite amount of stairs.
The ninja smiles and says, "16.  You know what?  Let's do 30 not 18, you're doing this pretty fast."
"Huh?" is about all I could get out at that point...and I seem to use this expression far too often when I'm with the ninja.  Apparently, when I work out, I become a caveman.  Articulate speech, syntax, and vocabulary are reduced to a lexicon of grunts and monosyllabic drivel.  Not exactly the way I want to present myself in general, but then I wouldn't wear clothing this tight in real life either, so at least my neanderthal-self is contained within the gym.
"Keep going, do 30."
"Kay" I say doubting my ability to continue, but trusting that the ninja knows that I will push myself to go on because, 1.  He asked me to do it...and 2.  There is a witness, and I do not want to disappoint.
He counts me down all the way to zero, and then I get to rest.  Sweat, sweat, huff, puff...same old story.  When I first started running stairs 7 months ago, I did 10 ups and downs in a couple minutes...now I'm doing 30.  And apparently, I'm going to do it again, to see if I can beat that time.  Time to take out the extra steps, time to change the down from rest to the quick part.  While I feel like I'm running out of energy, I overhear the ninja telling Aaron why he includes exercises such as this in my training and it makes me soldier on.  And I do so, to the tune of under two minutes.  Yay me!  And yay ninja, because nothing makes me feel prouder than beating my previous time, especially when the challenges are back to back.
Floor to ceilings with the ninja

Now what?  I feel like I could accomplish anything after that.  Floor to ceilings with 20 pounds in each hand,  15 of them, three sets.  No problem.  First, Jonathan spots me and explains what he's doing to Aaron.  Then Aaron takes over, and I start my last 15.  Oh, wow...this is getting heavy.  I attempt to lift the weights over my head on one of the last reps and my left arm gives out a bit and the weight comes crashing to a stop on my shoulder.  Aaron apologises for not being there, but truth be told I kinda like a "lifting bruise."  It makes me feel tough.  And, while I'm squatting then pressing those weights up and down again, I have a lifeguard right behind me and a ninja directly in front, so life is still pretty good....bruises or no.

Step-ups with weights and burpees followed, and somewhere in the middle of that Aaron looks at me taking a swig from my newly filled water bottle.
"Looks like that water is coming out of you as soon as it goes in." He smiles cheekily.
"Yes, but looking on the bright side, when I lie down on the mat to do a burpee, the cotton of my shirt wipes up the sweat that I left behind the time before," I retort.  I can be facetious too.
This is what a push-up looked like in February
Then after my mopping up burpees it's time to stay in the prone position and do some push-ups.  These I have been practicing, unbeknownst to my ninja.  He says start with 10 full push-ups, I do 10.  He says go to 15, I go to 15.  Ha!  Practicing.  I think we all know that push-ups "exercise the pectoral muscles, triceps, and anterior deltoids, with ancillary benefits to the rest of the deltoids, serratus anterior, coracobrachialis and the midsection as a whole."  But, what you may not know is that at 292 pounds it is very difficult to even accomplish 1 knees-down push up.  In January, my gut and boobs practically propped me up as they rested on the mat.  Push-ups were knees down, always.  As I began to lose weight, Jonathan got me to push-up first with my knees down and then lift my legs 1 at a time positioning myself into full push-up pose, then I would lower down to my belly and do it again.  He tells the lifeguard, that he has never modified push-ups in that manner but by splitting up the components, I was still able to reap the benefits.  And so I show off the benefits by doing another round of push-ups.
The ninja smiles and says, "Remember, when you couldn't do these at all?"
"Yes.  And I'm glad you're laughing at that now and not then."  Then I attempt to go a little deeper into a push-up and promptly fall on my face.  "Woops, you spoke too soon."
He shakes his head.
Sit-ups were also a challenge, it's hard to fold yourself in half when you have the equivalent of a pillow and two throw cushions figuratively strapped around your abdomen.  Now I'm doing a sit-up with one leg straight, one bent, and a weight in one hand that I'm shoulder pressing as I come up.  I'm still not very good at these, but I am no longer struggling to keep my legs together - do not read anything into that!  I've lost a significant amount of thigh fat.  That is all.

Planks are next, I flip over and assume the position.  I really dislike planks, mostly because I suck at them.  Why can't I hold the pose for longer than 45 seconds?  Gahhh!  Seriously, my arms start shaking, my abs want to give out, and my thighs seize up.  It's not pretty.  And, I'm all fine and dandy if I do them with my arms straight...but as soon as I go on my forearms, everything changes.  The ninja and lifeguard are discussing what we at MAC would call "style-stepping" or how you adapt the way you teach things to suit the person to whom you are teaching.

Aaron asks, "Do people fight you?"
"Yes.  Suzie's been pretty good.  The only thing she's fought me on are planks," says the ninja coyly.
Overhearing this in mid-plank has made it difficult for me to keep my knees up, especially because I have made it a point to never fight the ninja on anything and do exactly what I'm told...and now he's said what?
"I have never fought you!" I breath out, sweat dripping off my forehead.  "Are you trying to start a fight?"  45 seconds are up...and I'm resting on my belly.  "I have never fought you...unless you count this, and I'm fighting you on the fact that I've never fought with you...over anything...except possibly this...so it doesn't count!"
Back to planking, now I have to keep in form for another 45 seconds or I'll look like I'm fighting him.  For the record, I have never, ever disagreed with any of his training methods, I've always grinned and bearred it.  And, yes, sometimes I fall out of plank and he says get back in...and I do!  C'mon!  This is hard!  Haha...I am a model student...as much as I can be.  Why fight him when it's working?  Perhaps that's my style-stepping?  It used to be if I didn't like something, I wouldn't do it...and now, if it's hard, but I know it's going to tone my arms or strengthen my back or do something that I want it to do...well, I practice it.  Like push-ups, and don't think that I haven't been practicing planks...I have been...but they still suck.

Practice makes perfect.  And, this is training after all.

Weigh-in Wednesday #20 through #23 - June revisited!

Well, I have to say...I've been a little lackadaisical in the last little while, no...I have not stopped working out and eating right, obviously I've been doing that so much that it's been VERY tough to get on the computer and post updates.  And for that, I'm very sorry...because I've had soooooo many posts that have been in my brain, but as I never finished the Ukee one, I never started the other ones.

So, what's been happening with me in the last little while?  Well...lemme tell you!

Starting weight:  292.1

Weigh-in Wednesday #20 June 5th, 2013 - Weight = 221.6 pounds.  Stayed the same weight at last WI :-(  Still at 70.5 pounds down though...that's the bright side...sometimes I have to look at that!

Weigh-in Wednesday #21 June 12th, 2013 -  215.6 pounds.  Made up for 2 weeks of the same weight by dropping 6 pounds in one week...and on my 5th month of healthy living...that is ah-mazing.

Weigh-in Wednesday #22 June 19th, 2013 -  213.2 pounds.  Takes me down another 2.4 pounds and to a grand total of 78.9 pounds down!

Weigh-in Wednesday #23 June 26th, 2013 - 207.9 pounds.  OMG...I'm so close to being under 200 pounds, I can't even believe it...lost another 5.3 pounds this week!  How is this even possible?

That's the last 4 weeks in a nutshell...not a very interesting read, but that takes us to now.  And now I can get started on what's in my head.

Yogattitude

My mother's been doing it since the 70s, my MAC friends swear by it, the oracle Delfine does it 3-4 times a week after work, and archaeologist Gregory Possehl sees "a form of ritual discipline" depicted in several seals dating back to the 3rd millennium before common era, so I think it's about time that I try yoga too.

I ventured into Fan Tan Alley just before dark via Pandora, found the elevator past the blast of aromatherapy escaping one store, and journeyed up 5 storeys to MokSana.  I get out of the elevator, and I am greeted by a plethora of shoes.  Good thing I wore my slip-on jika tabi...I added them to the top of the pile.  Just being in a yoga studio is foreign to me, so I make my way to the front desk and I am instructed to go up the steep stairs on the right.

At the top and through a door, a steamy yoga studio revealed itself.  There were a few colourful mats on the hardwood floor, props piled high on the wall shelving, 360 degrees of windows, an overwhelming sense of calm in the room, and a picture of Ganesha on the wall...I plopped myself next to him...if an elephant (albeit a very special one) can do yoga, so can I.

MACoween 2006 - Taryn, Pam, Marc, Me, Jess
Lil' Red came over to me as soon as she saw me.  I attempted to attend Taryn's class (Anahata Moon Yoga) last week, but was thwarted by a late husband, a bad sense of direction, the front desk, and a locked door.  That makes it seem much more dramatic than it was in reality...but I don't care.  Let there be drama.  We're going to meditate all that away soon.  Taryn welcomed me to the class with a big hug and a bunch of compliments...awww shucks.  I met this beautiful soul in 2006 when I started working at MAC @ The Bay Victoria.  She and I (along with Kirsten) were the fiery redheaded component of the team; small in stature, big in personality.      Taryn took me through my "sink or swim" orientation on counter.  Her teaching methods were thoughtful and patient, too bad I started during holiday rush madness.  Luckily, yoga is nothing like a MAC counter at Christmas.

A journey of a thousand leagues begins beneath one's feet - Lao-tzu

Okay, that quote is not Indian, but it's what I thought of when I started being all bendy and yogic.  Since starting this challenge, I have tried to be open to all forms of exercise (no matter what I feel that I am capable of) and yoga was just one more class for which I was game.  So when Taryn commenced the practice with शवासन or corpse pose, I was relieved to say the least.

Yogini Taryn
Taryn started by relaxing our bodies and then brought us gradually into positions after fully realising 3 count breathing.  She explained the movements so precisely that I never felt lost (which is an accomplishment because I feel that way pretty much every time I do anything related to exercise).  I was happy to discover that my body actually accepted, nay, rejoiced at doing yoga.  Which is brilliant for a newbie like me, the class flew by as I flowed from one pose to another...not the same way as other students did during the class, but Taryn's method taught me to accept the fact that I was a neophyte and that modification was not a weakness.  At least I was endeavouring to achieve all positions.  When I was done, she even saluted my downward dog.  Who knew I was good at ass-over-teakettle?  Haha...When I left the studio, I was relaxed, had sweated, and felt one with myself.

Yoga?
Yes please.
See you next Tuesday.

Mirror, mirror on the wall...

...who's the fairest of them all?
While I am almost positive that I look like a complete idiot when I'm working out (is that the reason my ninja sometimes smiles and won't tell me why...and why he makes me do things in front of the mirror?  Quite possibly)...but there are people at the gym who decidedly don't.  Would it be weird for me to go up and congratulate them?  Because that's exactly what I want to do.  I want to honour their dedication to fitness, their determination to make exercise a part of their daily routine, and celebrate their commitment to taking care of themselves.  They need to know that they look stunning in spandex bouncing around in the aerobics class, running on the treadmill, or flexing in the the weight room, don't they?

My propensity for words often leads me into conversation with perfect strangers, but I haven't complimented anyone on their physique yet.  I'm still trying to figure out how to look at myself in the mirror without averting my eyes.  Seriously.  I have lost close to 30 pounds, and it's probably harder for me to accept the way I look now than 30 pounds ago.  Maybe, it's because I'm in the gym doing things that I never thought I would be doing in front of those mirrors.  I have nothing to hide behind, and I'm wearing stretchy, sweaty clothing.  Today, I was asked to look at my snatch in the mirror (get your mind out of the gutter..it's a weightlifting thing) and I looked straight ahead to make sure that I was in the correct position and then I looked up, so I wouldn't have to see my reflection.  Maybe this is something I need to discuss with my mental coach.

Evil Queen face C/O Venomous Villains
I guess it has something to do with the fact that I've made drastic changes in my life that are affecting my frame, but the changes are subtle to anyone other than me.  I can fit into the jeans that I already own, but I haven't quite gone down into a smaller size.  I have dents were my waist is forming, but I'm still not comfy wearing a shirt with too much structure lest it show off my belly.  My rational side says, "you're doing great...keep it up, you've made progress."  And, my self-conscious teenage-girl side says, "you still look gross."  There's also a voice inside my head that tells me that I'm a supermodel when I put my hands on my hips and stomp on the treadmill...so maybe I shouldn't listen to the voices.

Happy Mardi Gras! Or Big Boned Tuesday..in case Tuesday is a bit sensitive about that sort of thing.

French Quarter Fest 2012, Bourbon Street
Mardi Gras @ the Crystal Pool & Fitness Centre means water and cardio...not Hurricanes and beads.  For the record, I wore beads, but I didn't earn them.

Tuesday started with an elliptical party, and then friggin' stairs...and I thought, okay, this'll be like last time and I'll run up and down 5 times in a minute and then I'll do something else lifty squatty, and get super winded and want to throw up...and repeat that another 4 times.  But, no!  This Tuesday, I ran stairs for 1 and a 1/2 minutes for gods know how many times with a break and then repeat x 4.

Huff puff.

Then fancy boxing...with footwork no less.  And Jonathan said, "Oh good, you're actually punching hard now."  Compliment taken.  Thank you, Jonathan...stop laughing at me.  Giggling as sweat blinds me and because I apparently don't know my left from my right (remember the L is formed by the fingers on your left hand).  Push-ups, you say?  Real ones...get your legs up and stop backing up out of them.  Haha..oh, you caught on to that.  But my abs are still hurting from Friday!  Oh, is that where your lower abs are?  I believe the phrase rhymes with clucking bell.  Kinda tripping over my feet at this point...more boxing?  Sure...love it.

Sweat sweat sweat.
Sweaty Shreveport werewolf t-shirt.

Off we go now to the other end of the building to do some weights (the gorilla stance lift with your arm keep your elbows in and don't round your back)...and then boxing with running.  WTF?  Running?  Yes, I have to punch Jonathan 40 times and sprint to the end of the hall and touch a ball and come back.  I got away with "walk quite quickly" to the end of the hall.  Of course I jog down...just showing off...and then I have to walk fast back because I shouldn't show off.  And do that 3 more times.  No going backwards.  ACK!  And I'm dead.

Last night, after doing an hour and a half of hard cardio in the morning and walking into town to get my hair did, and then going home briefly to do some blogging that gave way to napping...and then returning to the Crystal Pool & Fitness Centre to attend a running clinic.  No, you did read that correctly...however, don't get too excited, I'm in the walking group...and I had NOOOOO idea that people could walk that fast, let me tell you.  So that, combined with Tuesday's workout, lead to my premature death.

Not really.

But let me just say this:  Exercise is making every day activities very difficult...for example, laughing hurts my lower abs and I can't point at things because that would require lifting my arm.  I'm even having problems standing up sometimes...and not just because I get stuck to my exercise ball.

Ah yes, cardio combined with strength-training...turns me to jelly every time. Which is interesting, because I seem to be primarily made out of jelly to begin with...isn't that what we're trying to get away from, Jonathan?

I guess you had to be there...

Scene 2
(Tuesday, January 29th, 2013 - The Crystal Pool & Fitness Centre - the hallway closest to the weight room, there is a set of mats stage left.  Suzie and Jonathan are part way through their regular Tuesday afternoon strength training session, Suzie is drenched with sweat and wearing an over-sized Montreal Canadiens t-shirt, she is doing modified "mountain climbers" as Jonathan monitors the stopwatch on his phone, looks on and coaches her.)

               Jonathan
Get those legs up…

                Suzie
I can't, my belly's in the way!

               Jonathan
That’s what we’re trying to get rid of…keep ‘em up.

No rest for the wicked

Okay...so I get one day of rest per week.

Today is Saturday, and I don't have to go into the gym.  Here I bounce at the computer on my exercise ball, writing, and trying hard not to fall forwards, or backwards, or sideways.  It's a tricky new "chair."  Already tried to kill me a few times, but it's much easier on my arse than a traditional model.  I now live in constant fear of popping it.  So far, so good.

I also live in fear of what's happening tomorrow.  Tomorrow, Jonathan has invited me to join FITcamp.  FITcamp...which I, at first, started calling FITfarm...I hope there are ponies!  And then, for some reason, changed to "FITclub."  What does that mean?

1st rule of FITclub is you do not talk about FITclub.
2nd rule of FITclub is you DO NOT talk about FITclub.
3rd rule of FITclub is if someone says "stop" or goes limp, taps out the FIT is over.

Wow, this is getting really weird, really fast.  I will leave you with this...upon hearing about FITclub, my good friend Vicky Voodoo said, “There better be a special handshake involved somewhere.”  I agree.  Or ponies.

“I’ll buy the next round…”

It's discombobulated hula time!
Round 2 – Wait?  You mean I have to do this more than once?  It’s a continual thing…yeah?

Tuesday equals cardio in the morning and Jonathan in the afternoon.  The first part was pretty much like the day before with slightly more balance and just a tiny bit more tension/incline/speed, what have you…same sweaty mess at the end of it though.

This is waaaayyyyy too much information, I know, but my brand spankin’ new sports bra is crap.  My boobs think they’re Steve McQueen.  I need to buy something that the pair of them can’t tunnel through to freedom, something possibly akin to Brünnhilde’s breastplate, something that would make Richard Wagner proud.  Of course, metal would be best but with the amount I’m sweating…it would corrode in mere minutes.

Back to the workout…my afternoon session was more…how do I put this?  Holy sh!t.  And here I was thinking the cardio part was hard.  Remember those Canadian Fitness Tests that we all did in elementary school?  Well…I feel like I did one of those again…today.  Luckily, my “gym teacher” wasn’t a cranky aging athlete in tear-away pants…AND he didn’t make me climb a rope.  It was more like, “Here’s a wall, bend your knees to 90 degrees and hang out for as long as you can.”  Oh, of course…lemme just do that for 10 bloody seconds.  No, I didn’t want that recorded...so I did it again and lasted 20 seconds.  And, I did 8 push-ups…pretty impressive, eh?  Bahaha…

And so on and so forth.  Sweat, sweat, sweat…squat, squat, squat…elliptical, elliptical, elliptical, weights, weights, weights…and my coordination is just stellar.  For a good time, come see me when I’m starting to fade.  Oh, you want me to pull these stretchy bands?  Put everything I have into it?  Okay…let me just do some sort of discombobulated hula that I just made up while I do so.

I can’t stand it when I know I suck…and I sucked.  I sucked hard.  However, I didn’t NOT do it because I knew I sucked…and I found pride and a double negative in that…so the experience was a positive one.

And then I walked home.  OW!
