"Find your awesome."

I always wanted to be an actress growing up...so, when Shaw TV storyteller Paul Beilstein got my name from Esquimalt Recreation Centre and was interested on taping a story on me, I was obviously very excited...and at the same time, absolutely terrified.  Hello, stage fright!  Also, I had to let him know that taping a segment would have to be ASAP as I was scheduled for surgery on my popped ACL in four days.  That was a little over 10 weeks ago.  And the segment just came out this week on Channel 4.

I called him up expecting him to pass on the opportunity, because who wants to do a story on the girl who lost a lot of weight and took her life back through healthy living, but was in traction because of a sports injury?  Okay, maybe not traction...but I didn't know that in November.  The Ninja, internet, and my surgeon had warned of a long recovery and weight gain, and I was understandably apprehensive.  But, I had a few things on my side.  1.  I was fit.  2.  I knew how to eat (even if I didn't follow my own rules ALL of the time).  3.  My doctor was rumoured to be one of the best in Victoria.  And, 4.  I was steadfast in the belief that I wouldn't have sustained the injury if the universe had ordained it to be something I couldn't get through and/or learn from.  Well, I learned this:  a sports injury is a setback, but not something you can't get through.  And for the record, do the exercises that are posted on the orthopaedic surgeon's website, they aren't there just for filler AND stay positive!

Well, he didn't look me over, he was surprisingly optimistic that we could tape something in the new year while I was in recovery from my surgery.  Not only did this motivate me, but gave me something to look forward to in my rehabilitation.  I had obviously been in the spotlight somewhat by being in the TC Health Challenge in 2013, and then featured again in the paper as the previous "biggest loser" and workout buddy to Troy Wilson, the Crystal Pool's 2014 challenger, but this definitely kept me motivated after surgery.  Propped up on the couch waiting for the pain to subside, is not exactly my idea of a good time.  I had pain killers, of course, but I didn't want to take them for too long.  I longed to get back into the gym before my muscle tone disappeared.  The impending TV appearance was helpful in keeping my eating in check, though I hadn't realised that inactivity would largely affect my appetite.  My body didn't crave what it craved before my forced rest period - well done body!  I ended up losing 9 pounds after surgery, and went from 156lbs to 147lbs in 2 weeks.

I wanted to get back down to my lowest weight of 138 before the taping of Paul's healthy living piece, but let's be realistic here, I wasn't half the athlete as I was before the surgery.  Heck, I didn't even have full extension in my leg...but eventually, I could walk, I could ride a stationary bike, and I could work my upper body.  So two weeks after surgery, I went to my first yoga class.  It was ridiculous, I couldn't do most of it...but I went, and it gave my mind some sort of peace just knowing I was doing some sort of exercise.  Shortly after that, I started going to the Crystal, and managed a bunch of workouts that took my disability into consideration.  I even worked out with the ninja once or twice before Christmas.  I gave it my all, and then accidentally gave in to cheddar, holiday baking, champagne, and lobster (because the Spitfyre's celebrate with crustateans not turkey).  I, like everyone else, indulged over Yule...so I lost, but then gained.  Not the end of the world.  Maybe I'll just blame muscle gain?  Ha!

A couple weeks ago I taped the segment, at 156 pounds, and though I felt awesome...I was also worried that I would be giving people the wrong impression.  Eat clean and train dirty, that's what I always say...and here I was doing that but I was still 18 pounds up from my lowest weight.  What kind of an example is that?  Was I being too hard on myself?  Perhaps.  I biked to Esquimalt Rec Centre in the rain the day of filming, then promptly ran to the bathroom and attempted to fix my fringe.  Yes, I have curly hair that likes to misbehave in humidity...and I was going to be on TV!  When I met up with Paul, the ninja, and the camera guy, I was so nervous...even my hands were a bit shakey.  Of course they wanted to tape the workout segment before the interview...do boys not know what happens to girls when they sweat?!  Especially if they have curly hair?!  No, no they don't...but it didn't matter...I had much bigger things to deal with, like a lens in my face, mounted on a barbell, and following my every move.

Camera shy.  That's my, I guess.  Who would have thunk it!?  Perfect bangs and 138 pound frame gone...I resigned myself to do what I had originally set out to do 2 years ago when I started this journey and blog, motivate others to get healthy and get active.  If two years ago I had worried what I looked like and how much I weighed, I would never be where I am now...so suck it up, Princess...do what the Ninja tells you, answer Paul's questions honestly, have fun, and tell your story.  And that's exactly what I did.

Stuck in reruns...

Though a lot has happened in the last few weeks, I feel like I've been stuck on repeat.  Obviously, this blog is dedicated to my health and fitness journey...so why, oh why, do I rerun my least favourite episodes?!  The ones normal viewers would glance at and then change the channel in favour of something a bit more exciting, fresh, edgy.

It's December 1st and I haven't blogged in over 2 months...it's almost like last season's programming went a little downhill and I'm trying to come up with an exciting fall opener that will have people raving about the clever writers that must have been hired to keep the show alive, even in it's umpteenth season.

I have also come to the realisation that this programme may not be about weight.  I am already the Biggest Loser, I have completed the Taking If Off component of this performance, and as the TC Health Challenge concluded in April of 2013 - the Celebrity Weight Loss component has certainly come to a close.  Now, for those that want to see some reality TV...despite how terrible it is...let me rerun my Weigh-In Wednesdays for the last few months.

Starting weight - January 16th, 2013 - 294lbs
53rd weigh-in - January 22th, 2014 - 151.8lbs

58th weigh-in - February 26th, 2014 - 145.7lbs

60th weigh-in - March 12th, 2014 - 145.1lbs

62nd weigh-in - March  26th, 2014 - 143.3lbs

69th weigh-in - May 14th, 2014 - 140.5lbs
And this is where I left you...fortunately, my programme continued over the summer hiatus...but wasn't aired because of a writer's strike.

It was shortly after this weigh-in that our protagonist returned to work.  After a year and a half of living the life health and fitness, credit card bills and reality forced her back into the rat race.  If only it were a race, she would have ribboned for sure.
70th weigh-in - May 21st, 2014 - 143.3lbs
71st weigh-in - May 28th, 2014 - 144.3lbs
72nd weigh-in - June 4th, 2014 - 157.8lbs
73rd weigh-in - June 11th, 2014 - 141.3lbs
After moving from a management role and into an artist's position with her cosmetics company, Spitfyre was excited to show off all her hard work by donning a kick-ass outfit and making a guest appearance at a training session in Vancouver.
74th weigh-in - June 18th, 2014 - 138.7lbs
On her 74th weigh-in, Spitfyre came the closest she had ever come to reaching her elusive goal weight.  After 18 months of clean eating and training dirty, she celebrated her success in Vancouver with her Croatian Conscience.
75th weigh-in - June 25th, 2014 - 143.9lbs
76th weigh-in - July 2nd, 2014 - 148.8lbs

95th weigh-in - November 12th. 2014 - 154.7lbs
96th weigh-in - November 19th, 2014 - 156lbs
Twenty weeks of reruns.  Up, down, up, down, up, down, up up, down down, same, down, up, this show is getting pretty boring, I hope I don't get cancelled.  Of course, that's up to me, isn't it?!?  Not the cancelled thing, the boring bit.  I need some more inspiration, I need to find my audience again, I need to stop my daytime soap opera saga and get back into writing dark comedy, drama, and sitcoms.

I never understood why people watch soap operas.  The pace is so slow, something afforded to a daily programme.  At least with weeklies, you see the episode and look forward to the next one.  And time passes, but you're not witness to the mundane details of the characters' existence.  The writers are lazy, but you can be when you are writing about the day to day minutia of life.  Interest builds when you have an economy of air time, how do you tell the story completely in one hour a week?  You need to be clever.  If it's a serial, you have most likely established your characters and their back stories and you can focus on events and situations that intrigue, humour, and excite the viewer.  So that's what I'm going to do...start this season with a bang!

Just another manic Monday...or is it?

Good Monday morning!

It's a beautiful start to the day here in our fair city of Victoria, British Columbia.  I woke up a little late, but I am excited for the start of this new week...Why you ask?  Well, it's manic Monday - rewritten.

So why are Mondays good?  Let's see...it's the start of a new week...and this week is particularly important because it's the week after the end of TC Health Challenge 2014.  So rather than throw in the towel a mere 3 months after-Christmas and after celebrating Troy T-Bone Wilson's 70lbs lost during the challenge...I, like many other readers I'm sure, will be starting the week out right just as we've been doing for the last 12 weeks.  I declare my outright commitment to this healthy lifestyle.  Generally I do this on Weigh-in Wednesdays, but Monday is better than Wednesday, because it's sooner...and it's now...and there's no time like the present.

It's good to reboot from time to time, set the bod and brain back to factory settings.

My  hard-wire for diet is caveman-inspired, with a bit of agricultural revolution thrown in.  What's that they say?!  The archaeologist is always right?  Haha...whatever...I try not to eat processed food, I love lean animal-proteins (former vegetarian turned omnivore...woopsy), I munch on nuts and seeds for their good fats, I enjoy unlimited amounts of fruits and veg (I like eating A LOT...so these add bulk to my meals), I have portioned whole grains - it's pretty much that simple.  I shop for groceries every few days, and always have fresh produce in the house for spur-of-the-moment stir-fries and gorgeous gargantuan salads.  I do my best to eat cleanly, and mechanically.  I pretty much have set "feeding times" so that I am never too ravenous...that lessens the chance that I will over-eat.  I still have a tendency to do that, even after 15 months on programme, but I am learning.  For this reason, I still journal EVERYTHING...even when I indulge in a treat or two.  I also try to be prepared, carrying food in my bag at all times and taking a few minutes on Sundays to plan my dinners for the week.  That keeps me in check.

My fitness regimen does not include running away from sabre-toothed tigers and/or mammoths...though that is great exercise...it remains almost exactly the same as when I started with the TC Health Challenge.  I do slow-burn cardio in the mornings 6 days a week - Monday through Friday I also walk to and from the Crystal Pool, or at least I try to do so, I sometimes ride my bike.  My double-up days are Monday (MIJO Sport Taekwondo), Tuesday (evening cardio followed by Taryn Strong's Anahata Moon Yoga for Recovery at MokSana), Wednesdays (MIJO Sport Taekwondo) and sometimes Thursdays (Taryn Strong's Anahata Moon Yoga - Hatha class at Hemma) and Saturdays off...two of my morning workouts are ninja training sessions i.e. personal training sessions with Jonathan Carpenter of MIJO Sport.  I love my gym time.  It is a time when I disconnect with my kinetic monkey-mind and just sweat everything out.  When I'm done, even after all that hard work, I feel recharged, refocused, refreshed.

After a fabulous weekend where I may have imbibed some BEvERages and eaten some bacon on Friday evening, quite possibly had a Dynamite Roll lunch with T-Bone Troy and Korean BBQ for dinner with a bunch of ninjas on Saturday, and had a Sunday Funday supper of rustic French food, including 3 gorgeous slices of whole wheat crusty baguette and drunken beef stew (yes, I ate bread and there may have been a smidgeon of butter on each piece)...after all that, I, SUZIE SPITFYRE, commit to clean.  Eating that is, I still believe in training dirty...and it's probably the only reason that I am not beating myself up mentally for the treats I had this weekend - I hit the gym every day this past week.

Monday, oh Monday...you and I used to have such a sordid relationship.  I would have wild weekends and then I would promise to never stray again.  Then I would break my word and cheat on you...numerous times.  And then I would swear up and down that the next time you came round I would stick with it, but it never happened.  Until January of 2013 when I embarked on a brand new love affair with health and fitness, what a threesome we make!  We've only been together for 15 months, but it's been really working out.  We spend almost all our time together and I have gotten a lot of really nice meals out of it.  So today, I'm going to make some similar statements, Monday...but, this time it's more of an affirmation that after a year and 3 months of eating a healthy diet and getting lots of exercise, I can do this...even after a bit of mild flirtation on the weekend.  I know, I know just as long as not every Thursday is thirsty, every Friday is fitness-free, every Saturday is saturated-fat-filled, and every Sunday is sugary.  Monday, I'm using you to reboot...you are now Moderation Monday instead of Manic Monday.

Lost in translation...

2013 Viva Glam Suzie
Where have I been?  Certainly not blogging...that's for sure.  It's been 12 days since my last post.

Yikes.

Well, I've been scratching out ideas for blog posts on sticky tabs, plugging notes in the memo section of my smart phone, and jotting stuff down on random opened envelopes around the loft.  I've been talking about things I want to share on OMG with my fellow ninjas-in-training, getting pumped up by the new Times Colonist Health Challenge peeps, and yet nothing got posted on the interweb.

2014 Viva Glam Suzie
What has prevented me from writing?  I have been working out to the point of exhaustion and nausea - but what else is new?  I have been eating healthily - again, same ol', same ol'.  A-ha!  I have not been drinking alcohol!  That could be it...right?  No, wait.  My evenings have been freed up a bit, so I should have had more time to blog.

Who cares?  Why do I always try and find a reason or an excuse?  There is no excuse...I just haven't been at it.  It's as if my thoughts have been lost in translation...or something like that.  There, floating around my brain, but not expressed in type.

Time for some type-casting!

Weigh-in Wednesday #48 - Odin's bad eye

Yesterday, I said that I was going into weigh-in blind, and so I did.  It is said that Odin, father of the Norse gods, sacrificed one of his eyes to drink of the Well of Urd whose waters imparted the knowledge of the cosmos.  Well, I could use more knowledge (couldn't everyone?) and I do drink a lot of water, but am I willing to go blind for it?  Not really.  So, what does this have to do with Weigh-in Wednesday?  Well, the day after Týr's Day is Wēdnes Dæg...and Wednesday is named after Wōdin (Anglo Saxon for Odin) and in order to check my weight on the scale, I had to open my eyes to gain the knowledge of my new number.  You with me so far?  Good, I'm glad you're coming with me on this.  Haha...luckily, Mímir (guardian of the well) didn't ask for anything in return, though I did sacrifice 0.7lbs of fat.

I worked out like a viking and ate like a valkyrie and lost 0.7 pounds this week.  Progress is progress whether it's 0.7 of a pound or 7 pounds, right?  And speaking of progress, I meant to post this on Thor's Day and not 7 weeks later like the last WIW update.  Alas, I couldn't get my Asgård in gear and am posting this on Friday.  Ah, Frigg!

Weigh-in Wednesday #...well, the last 7 weeks worth…woops.

Well, when it comes to writing about my weigh-ins…I have seriously been slacking off - sorry about that.  Perhaps it’s because they have been a bit more uppy downy since my knee injury and that makes me feel a little like I’m not very versed in losing lately.  At least the uppy ones make me feel that way.  The downy ones still make me feel great.  Especially since the last 7 weigh-ins have taken me into the 50s…and I dig that era, and that weight.  47 weeks ago I told the ninja that I eventually wanted to be 150 pounds…and I certainly did not expect to get down to 154.1 pounds in 11 months.  That’s pretty wicked.  That’s 138 pounds lost according to me, and 140 pounds according to Jonathan, as a million years ago he weighed me in on a random Monday and I was up 2 pounds from my initial Weigh-in Wednesday…but he wins because 140 sounds more impressive than 138.

Here’s what you know already:

Starting weight:  292.1
1st weigh-in:  286.8
2nd weigh-in:  280.1
3rd weigh-in:  276.4

37th weigh-in 169
38th weigh-in 170.2
39th weigh-in 174.7

And, here’s what’s happened on the scale in the last 7 weeks:

Oct. 30th, 2013 - 41st weigh-in 162.8
Nov. 6th, 2013 - 42nd weigh-in 159.9

Dec. 4th, 2013 - 46th  weigh-in 156.5
Dec. 11th, 2013 – 47th weigh-in 154.1

The day after WIW #41 was Hallowe’en, and I trained at the gym as a zombie…and thanks to my MAC make-up and mad make-up skills people just thought I was just a bit ill…with pink eye.

Right before WIW #42 my bestie, Delfine, came to town.  Always so amazing to see her, and also to weigh-in in the 50s on Wednesday...even after a dinner party and drinks.  YAY!

The Saturday before WIW #43, I was training with the ninja, testing out the knee, and then the bloody thing gave out on me again.  So, that's the reason for the 6.1lb gain anyway...fluid retention...or it could have been the fun that was had in Courtenay on Thursday and Friday. Stéphane, Delfine, and myself headed up to the Kingfisher Oceanfront Resort and Spa for a bit of R 'n' R.  Seriously great massages on the Thursday, fabulous fancy dinner, libations, snacks, and amazing conversation.  The following morning, we visited the Pacific Mist Hydropath, which was quite the experience.  8 stations, including Swiss showers, mineral massage pool, 5 different kinds of waterfall massages, a eucalyptus filled steam cave, glacial waterfall (10 seconds of freezing water - I was able to endure the entire 10...yay me!), river walk (warm and cool sides), sea mineral soak, and finally tidal baths with seaweed salt scrub.  I hardly made it to the gym after that, and when I did...my skin was so slathered in green tea moisturiser that I nearly slid off the treadmill and could hardly hold onto the dumbbells, but I did get a workout in after the hydropath and before the most relaxing pedicure in the world.  Lovely to see my Montréal bestie, sucky to gain 6.1 pounds.

WIW #44 saw me lose the weight I had gained...or at least 4.3 pounds of it.  Time to pull out the salads for lunch, soup for dinner trick again, I guess.  Gah!  How long is it going to take me to lose this weight!?  Not so stressed out though, because I had to take a couple days off after injuring my knee again.  So the next week I can add some more exercise into my week.

WIW #45 - So only 2 weeks to lose the gained weight...not too shabby.  Plus an extra 1.4 pounds on top of that...lowest I've been in about 16 years, I'd say.  I think I was about 180 when I got back from Ireland, so pre-Ireland, I would have been maybe 170 or 160 something.  Not too shabby going into the holiday season in the 150s.  Gods help me to resist the temptations that this season brings...fortunately, I always say no to sweets, but it's a lot harder to say no to another glass of prosecco with Elderflower liqueur.  Mmmmm...

WIW #46 - 4 days after Stéphane's work party...and down another 2 pounds!  That, my friends, is awesome.  A fancy affair at the Union Club is how Genivar celebrates the holidays...seafood appetiser buffet, fancy cocktails to start, gorgeous dinner buffet, wine on the table, and top it off with 83497328943789 desserts.  So, what did I eat?  Well, I filled up 1/2 my plate with spinach salad, skipped the fatty dressings and opted for a couple wedges of lemon, picked up a deviled egg, and then had a slice of roast beef with some horseradish...because even though everything looked delish, I'd rather not have party guilt the next day.  I have a nasty habit of having 1 of something and then it opens the floor gates for another 1..and 1 more after that, and if I've had a couple glasses to wine, 1 turns into 5 very easily.  Better safe than sorry, so no cocktails, no appetisers, no mashed taters or Yorkshire puddings from the buffet, no bread and butter, no Christmas puds or cookies for me.  No, and because of that I still fit into the party dress that I bought specifically for the occasion!  Don't ask me how much wine I drank...on the plus side, I got some cardio in on the dance floor.

WIW #47 - 4 days after 2nd Christmas party of the season, another weigh-in.  And this time, I was suffering from "tried a few things from the buffet" guilt.  I know it's perfectly normal for other people to pick and choose a few nibblies to enjoy while drinking eggnog and chatting to other party goers, but I can't.  I have to eat before hand so that I don't begin to covet the gorgeousness that only a chef and pastry chef can make.  Around midnight, I may have sampled a handful of things...but Jägermeister Rudolf quite possibly had something to do with it, what a bad influence.  Check out Heather's delicious treats here www.VIN COCO.com.  Needless to say, I was feeling a little "fluffy" after that evening.  And, was surprise weighed-in on the Tuesday before WIW...I don't like it when my suspicions are confirmed not only by an impartial scale, but a rather observant ninja who also noticed my fluffiness.  160 to 154.1 in 1 day?  Well, it just goes to show how weighing in at the same time each week is the way to go.  I'm sure my weight fluctuates during the week, but if I were to check the scale throughout, I would go mental (more so that usual) and probably psyche myself out.  Why would I let a scale have that sort of power over me?

Having said that, I go into WIW #48 blind as Odin's bad eye...but knowing that I have worked out like a viking all week, Valkyrie Suzie that's me.  My diet has been spot on, except for a dinner party don't on Sunday when I guesstimated how many Wisecrackers I had with an approximated amount of antipasto, and I have stepped up the exercise this week.  Finger's crossed for tomorrow this full mooned Tiw's Day!  Though, I suspect hard work and a strict diet trumps luck every time.
